England, 1645. The cruel civil war between Royalists and Parliamentarians that is ravaging the country causes an era of chaos and legal arbitrariness that allows unscrupulous men to profit by exploiting the absurd superstitions of the peasants; like Matthew Hopkins, a monster disguised as a man who wanders from town to town offering his services as a witch hunter.

Witchfinder General is a 1968 British period folk horror film directed by Michael Reeves and starring Vincent Price, Ian Ogilvy, Hilary Dwyer, Robert Russell and Rupert Davies. The screenplay, by Reeves and Tom Baker, was based on Ronald Bassett's 1966 novel Witchfinder General.Set during the English Civil War, following Matthew Hopkins, a sadistic witch hunter, who exploits the chaos to torture and execute those accused of witchcraft. The story centers on Richard Marshall, a soldier who seeks revenge against Hopkins after he and his assistant harm his fiancée and her family.
