I've been researching newly public domain films from 1929 and earlier, so I'm uploading the best possible copies that I can find. This gangster drama launched a trend of gangster films and was a huge success for director Josef von Sternberg. It was the first collaboration between Sternberg and actor George Bancroft, though he would star in three more films for the director. Critics were mostly please at the time of release, and in the years since has also seen much acclaim.
