The Virginian
A good-natured cowboy who is romancing the new schoolmarm has a crisis of conscience when he discovers his best friend is engaged in cattle rustling.
From the archive
I've been researching newly public domain films from 1929 and earlier, so I'm uploading the best possible copies that I can find. One of the first Western films that was fully voiced, The Virginian was a massive success for its stars and director Victor Fleming. Even today the techniques used for sound synchronization and the use of outdoor filming are frequently praised. Critics at the time of release were exceptionally pleased by the film, although modern reviews are more lukewarm.
Why this is free to watch
The Virginian (1929) is hosted by the Internet Archive as a public-domain or openly licensed work, which means its copyright has expired, lapsed, or was released by the rights holder. The uploader declared an explicit licence, linked in the source panel. Nitrate streams the file directly from the Archive and hosts no video itself.
