The Scarlet and the Black
Fr. Hugh O'Flaherty is a Vatican official in 1943-45 who has been hiding downed pilots, escaped prisoners of war, and Italian resistance families. His activities become so large that the Nazis decide to assassinate him the next time he leaves the Vatican.

"The Scarlet and the Black" is a historical drama film directed by Jerry London, based on the true story of a Catholic priest during World War II. The film centers on Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty, played by Gregory Peck, who works in the Vatican. He becomes a key figure in helping Jews and Allied prisoners escape from the Nazis occupying Rome. Based on The Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican by J.P. Gallagher.
