The Brave Archer 射鵰英雄傳The Brave Archer (射鵰英雄傳), also known as Kungfu Warlord, is a 1977 Hong Kong wuxia film adapted from the novel The Legend of the Condor Heroes by Jin Yong. The film was produced by the Shaw Brothers Studio and directed by Chang Cheh, starring Alexander Fu and Tien Niu. The film is the first part of a trilogy and was followed by The Brave Archer 2 (1978) and The Brave Archer 3 (1981). The trilogy has two unofficial sequels, The Brave Archer and His Mate (1982) and Little Dragon Maiden (1983). Synopsis Guo Jing and Yang Kang are the sons of two rebels. After the rebels were killed, the boys were saved by martial artists, who decide to raise and train the boys separately, and let them compete with each other once they have grown up to see who is better. Guo Jing was trained by the "Seven Freaks of Jiangnan", while Yang Kang becomes the foster son of a Jurchen prince. When he reaches adulthood, Guo Jing travels to a local town, where he meets and befriends Huang Rong, who is actually the daughter of Peach Blossom Island's master Huang Yaoshi. He also meets Yang Kang, without knowing his true identity, during a contest to win the hand-in-marriage of Mu Nianci. Unknown to Yang Kang, his father is still alive and has adopted Mu Nianci. Tempted by the glory of being a prince's son, Yang Kang refuses to acknowledge his biological father and betrays him, causing his biological parents to die. Huang Rong and Guo Jing go on adventures together. Guo Jing learns the "Eighteen Dragon-Subduing Palms" from Hong Qigong, while Huang Rong is groomed by Hong Qigong to become his successor as chief of the Beggar Clan. They travel to Peach Blossom Island later to meet Huang Yaoshi, who does not approve of his daughter's marriage to Guo Jing. While exploring the island, Guo Jing meets Zhou Botong, who teaches him special martial arts techniques and forces him to read a manual, which is later revealed to be written by Huang Rong's late mother. Ouyang Feng visits Peach Blossom Island with his nephew Ouyang Ke, and he proposes a marriage between his nephew and Huang Rong. Just then, Hong Qigong also arrives and he strongly supports Guo Jing to marry Huang Rong. Eventually, Huang Yaoshi arranges for a contest between Guo Jing and Ouyang Ke to determine who is worthy of his daughter's hand-in-marriage. The last part of the contest involves both of them having to read a manual and recite it from memory later. As Guo had already read the manual earlier, he recites it easily and wins the contest. Huang Yaoshi agrees to his daughter's marriage to Guo Jing. However, Ouyang Feng realises that the manual is actually the fabled Jiuyin Zhenjing and wants it for himself. Ouyang Feng, Hong Qigong and Guo Jing get into a fight, in which Ouyang Ke is injured while Guo Jing and Hong Qigong use the opportunity to escape. However, Hong Qigong is also wounded and he gives Huang Rong his Dog Beating Staff, effectively handing over his leadership of the Beggar Clan to her. Ouyang Feng and Ouyang Ke pursue Guo Jing and Huang Rong to a deserted town for revenge. Guo Jing and Huang Rong take shelter in an abandoned tavern inhabited by only Shagu. Guo Jing and Huang Rong meet Zhou Botong again to find treasure. Guo Jing is wounded so Zhou Botong fights with Ouyang Feng, while Guo Jing retreats with Huang Rong so that he can get time to heal. They find a secret chamber in the abandoned tavern and hide there while Guo Jing recuperates. At this point, the story splits into several subplots, all taking place in the tavern. Yang Kang kills Ouyang Ke when the latter is about to molest Mu Nianci, and takes the Dog Beating Staff, which Huang Rong had carelessly dropped; Lu Guanying comes in search of Guo Jing; Mei Chaofeng appears and fights with the "Seven Immortals of Quanzhen". Huang Yaoshi comes here in search of his daughter, so Guo Jing and Huang Rong come out of their hiding place to meet him. Huang Yaoshi takes Shagu back to Peach Blossom Island after realising that she is the daughter of one of his former apprentices. Guo Jing and Huang Rong are kidnapped by members of the Beggar Clan later, who do not recognise them. Just then, Qiu Qianren comes to confront the Beggar Clan. The film is the third part of a trilogy and was preceded by The Brave Archer (1977) and The Brave Archer 2 (1978). The film has two unofficial sequels, The Brave Archer and His Mate (1982) and Little Dragon Maiden (1983), both of which were based on The Return of the Condor Heroes. The theme song of the film, "Sizhangji" (四張機), was composed by Chang Cheh, arranged by Joseph Koo and performed in Cantonese by Jenny Tseng. Synopsis Guo Jing and Huang Rong pursue Yang Kang to Iron Palm Peak, where Qiu Qianren and the Iron Palm Sect are based. Huang Rong is injured by Qiu Qianren in a fight and she escapes with Guo Jing's help. Guo Jing takes her in search of a cure to heal her wounds and they stumble upon a house in a swamp, inhabited by a woman called Yinggu. Yinggu tells them that the only person who can save Huang Rong's life is Duan Zhixing, the former ruler of the Kingdom of Dali who has become a monk. Guo Jing and Huang Rong travel to find Duan Zhixing, but they must defeat his four bodyguards in a battle of wits first. They manage to overcome the odds and eventually meet Duan Zhixing. Duan Zhixing explains to them that Yinggu had directed them to him on purpose, because in order to save Huang Rong, he will need to use his neigong in a way that may cost him his life. Duan Zhixing then proceeds to tell them a story of his past. Yinggu was actually his concubine when he was still the ruler of Dali, but he neglected her due to his obsession with martial arts and she had a secret affair with Zhou Botong. Yinggu became pregnant with Zhou Botong's child later. The infant was mortally wounded by a masked man, who wanted to force Duan Zhixing to use his neigong to save the infant's life. Duan Zhixing refused and the child died. Yinggu hates Duan Zhixing for that and she left him to lead a life in the swamp, while secretly plotting her revenge. Duan Zhixing tells Guo Jing and Huang Rong that he regrets his past decision and he will risk his life to save Huang Rong now. While Duan Zhixing is healing Huang, Yinggu infiltrates the residence and almost kills Duan Zhixing, but she changes her mind at the last moment. Duan Zhixing does not blame her and allows her to leave again. Just then, Qiu Qianren and the Iron Palm Sect's members show up to challenge Duan Zhixing to a fight. Yinggu recognises Qiu Qianren's martial arts technique and realises that he is actually the masked man who injured her child, and she joins in the fight. The Brave Archer and His Mate is a direct sequel to The Brave Archer, The Brave Archer 2 and The Brave Archer 3. It is followed by an unofficial sequel, Little Dragon Maiden (1983). Synopsis Guo Jing and Huang Rong return to Peach Blossom Island and are shocked to see that the Seven Freaks of Jiangnan have all been murdered except for Ke Zhen'e. Guo Jing is tricked into believing that Huang Yaoshi is responsible for the murders so he attempts to avenge his masters by fighting Huang Yaoshi. Huang Rong eventually uncovers the truth and reveals that the murders were committed by Ouyang Feng and Yang Kang. Ouyang Feng and Yang Kang want to make Guo Jing and Huang Yaoshi kill each other, so that Yang Kang can learn the Jiuyin Zhenjing from Ouyang Feng. Yang Kang ultimately dies of poisoning, leaving behind a son, Yang Guo, whom he has fathered with Mu Nianci. Mu Nianci also dies after entrusting Yang Guo to the care of Guo Jing and Huang Rong. Eighteen years later, Yang Guo has grown up under the couple's care alongside their daughter, Guo Fu, and the brothers Wu Xiuwen and Wu Dunru, whom the couple have taken as their apprentices. Guo Jing teaches the Wu brothers martial arts, but refuses to train Yang Guo as he is worried that Yang Guo will follow in his father's footsteps. Yang Guo develops a rivalry with the Wu brothers and Guo Fu, and leaves the island. He meets Ouyang Feng, who has become insane due to zouhuorumo. Ouyang Feng likes Yang Guo and teaches him the "Toad Skill". Yang Guo begins to suspect that Guo Jing and Huang Rong might be responsible for his parents' deaths after listening to Ouyang Feng's incomplete account of the story. The misunderstanding is resolved by Guo Jing, who takes Yang Guo to the Quanzhen School to be properly educated and trained by Yang Kang's former masters.
