Shaolin Kung Fu Mystagogue 達摩密宗血神飄
Watched by JoshStarks 28 Nov 2022 Peng-Yi Chang’s first foray into martial arts cinema is a solid, if a bit pedestrian, entry. It’s interesting to see elements Chang would incorporate into his style later in his career (nighttime melees, POV shots during combat, swordsmen clad in black, etc). As is almost customary here, we get a sweet pair of spinning blades of doom and death (they are suppose to be “parrots” but really just look like marijuana leaves) used by resident baddie, uh, Spinning Blades. Decent fights, decent music, decent acting…it’s a pretty decent first film, to be quite honest. If I had one thing to whine about, it would probably be the camerawork. I’m not sure if the sets were super small or the lenses on the cameras weren’t up to snuff, but a lot of closeups on people monologuing, and a little lacking on atmosphere. Minor quibbles in the long-run, and for a first-time director Peng-Yi does a solid job. Shaolin Kung-Fu Mystagogue wont blow your mind any (unless spinning blades are your thing), but it also wont leave you feeling disappointed. SHAOLIN KUNG-FU MYSTAGOGUE kind of rocks - it's like a Ming vs Ching wuxia and a Shaolin traitor kung fu film got smashed together, with some more esoteric wuxia elements sprinkled in. The film is enlivened by some creative weapons and dramatic camera work/editing, and Chang Yi's bad-ass sideburns. Not a masterpiece, but a good time! And yes, it is the best name for anything, ev SHAOLIN KUNG-FU MYSTAGOGUE kind of rocks - it's like a Ming vs Ching wuxia and a Shaolin traitor kung fu film got smashed together, with some more esoteric wuxia elements sprinkled in. Unknowingly, the evil Ching overlord and his men capture the incognito Prince and throw him in jail.
