Cashier and part-time starving artist Christopher Cross is absolutely smitten with the beautiful Kitty March. Kitty plays along, but she's really only interested in Johnny, a two-bit crook. When Kitty and Johnny find out that art dealers are interested in Chris's work, they con him into letting Kitty take credit for the paintings. Cross allows it because he is in love with Kitty, but his love will only let her get away with so much.

Scarlet Street (1945) is a film noir directed by Fritz Lang, based on the 1931 French film "La Chienne." The story revolves around Christopher Cross, a middle-aged, timid cashier who becomes infatuated with a young woman named Kitty. After crossing paths with Kitty, who is actually a con artist, Christopher unwittingly becomes embroiled in a web of deception. He initially helps support Kitty and her boyfriend Johnny, who sees an opportunity to exploit Christopher's affection for Kitty. When Christopher discovers that their relationship is purely a manipulation, chaos ensues, leading to a series of tragic events.
