Riders In The Sky Episode 6 Sourdough's Surprise
The sixth episode of Riders In The Sky, a short-lived children's television series that aired on CBS starring the titular Country/Western band of the same name. Intended as a replacement for Pee-Wee's Playhouse reruns (following the removal of that series from the CBS Saturday morning line-up after the July 1991 arrest of Paul Reubens), Riders In The Sky only lasted one season consisting of 13 episodes before it's cancellation. The series borrowed or modified many elements from the Riders' other projects, such as the character of "Sourdough" (a "sidekick" archetype, reminiscent of the roles Gabby Hayes played in B-Westers of the 1930s), being a replacement for the Riders' own "Sidemeat" character, and the alteration of "Slocum", a villain who in every other medium besides this series was portrayed by Fred "Too Slim" LaBour. Prior to the September premiere of the show, the Riders released Harmony Ranch, a children's album with the Columbia record label that featured characters from the series on the cover and liner note photographs. MCA (who had previously released several Riders In The Sky albums) released a compilation album titled Saturday Morning With Riders In The Sky as an attempt to capitalize on the show's success. While short-lived, the series managed to win a Daytime Emmy award in 1992 for Outstanding Achievement In Costume Design.
