NBC Nightly News
NBC Nightly News (April 2, 1982) This broadcast marked the final episode for longtime anchor John Chancellor, who had succeeded the news team of Huntley/Brinkley, and who would be replaced by another news duo. Roger Mudd in Washington and Tom Brokaw in Chancellor's spot in New York. It was an obvious attempt to replicate the Huntley/Brinkley formula. As Chancellor noted in his closing, he moved to working as a recurring commentator for the Nightly News (similar to David Brinkley's "Journal" editorials that he made for the Nightly News in the 1970s, just before switching over to ABC.) Chancellor remained in this position until his retirement in 1993. By that time, only Brokaw remained as sole Nightly News anchor. "What pleases me most is that I don't have to say goodbye, just good night. See you Monday."
