Vampira scenes from Plan 9 from Outer Space
Ed Wood's horror/sci-fi hybrid "Plan 9 from Outer Space" (1959) can be frustrating for Vampira fans as she has no lines and only 5 minutes of screen time. So, here are all her moments cobbled together in the same way Wood assembled Plan 9 from different sources. It's an alternate mini-movie, if you will, starring Vampira. (Unfortunately, the mpeg conversion process always darkens the image for some reason.) Background info: In the early '50s, statuesque Maila Nurmi was a model for assorted men's magazines (along with a young Tina Louise, Julie Newmar, et al.). In 1955-56 she shot to fame as Vampira, television's first horror hostess. Wood hired her for one day of shooting in 1956. Her scenes were filmed in just two hours and she was paid the union minimum wage of $200. Nurmi thought Wood was a pathetic "goon" and felt the film would amount to nothing. Little did she know that her small role in this insane film would be her lasting legacy. See my other listing for "The Vampira Show" with rare clips from 1954
