She became engaged to Mr. Marick. Throwing the cigar band that Trevor had given her into the roaring fire at Wildwind was a first step to accepting her new life as the soon-to-be Mrs. Dimitri Marick. But Dimitri's past would soon haunt Natalie. His wife, Angelique was said to have died in Vienna after spending 15 years in a hopeless coma -- but she was alive. On the night of Natalie and Dimitri's engagement party, Helga pulled off the surprise of surprises. At the stroke of midnight, Angelique appeared. Stunned by this turn of events, Natalie raced out of Wildwind, landing curled up in a ball outside Trevor's front door. Terrence Frye, the teenage son of attorney Livia Frye, wasn't looking for trouble when he applied for an after-school job at Tom Cudahy's health club. Trouble came looking for him -- because Terrence's skin was black. One day, two white kids, Rod and Jay taunted Terrence, peppering him with racial slurs. Terrence turned the other cheek, an action which angered the ruffians. They were looking for a fight. But Terrence wasn't about to give them one. After hours, Rod and Jay came back and savagely beat Terrence into a coma. A trial ensued, and the two white youths were brought to justice. Terrence made a full recovery, though Pine Valley would never again be the same innocent town after racism had reared its ugly head. Erica Kane reluctantly began 1992 as the old/new Mrs. Adam Chandler. And she surprised Adam by becoming the perfect wife. But Erica's happy homemaker mode was just a sham. It was all part of her plan to drive Adam crazy with kindness. On the work front, Erica rallied her forces in an attempt to stop Dimitri Marick's hostile take-over of Enchantment. Determined to seize control of Erica's company, Dimitri appeared in a face-to-face meeting on TV's Market Street Week. Afterwards, the pair met privately and argued. The chemistry was instant and unmistakable. The fight turned to passion as Dimitri pulled his rival into a kiss. Erica responded. A new romance was born in Pine Valley. Brian proposed to Hayley -- and was furious when she said "n-o!" "It's Adam. He made you change your mind. I know it." contended Brian, referring to the constant interference of Hayley's overbearing father. Brian poured out his heart to his new friend, An-Li, a beautiful Chinese girl who came to America with her mother, a maid at Cortlandt Manor. Brian married An-Li so that she could get her green card and avoid deportation. Shocked by the news of Brian's marriage, Hayley threw herself into arms of the despicable Will Cortlandt, who had grown bitter and violent in recent months. She married him. Brian slept with An-Li and got her pregnant. When Hayley refused to sleep with him, Will grew bitter and angry. One fateful night, Hayley promised to go all the way with Will, but flashes of her true love Brian prevented Hayley from giving in to Will's advances. Will's anger flared as she pulled away, making him furious. Hayley barricaded herself in the bedroom, making a frantic call to Brian. He raced to save her - but found Will dead - his head bashed in by a crowbar. "Who killed Will?" were the three words on everyone's tongues in the spring of 1992. Among those interested was Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Edmund Grey, a top notch investigative reporter who arrived in Pine Valley to cover the case. Many of those who wondered about the murderer were themselves suspects. Fifteen Pine Valley citizens were considered to have likely motives to do away with wicked Will. On May 11th, the real killer was revealed to be none other than Janet Green. She had slipped out of her hospital room (where she was awaiting the birth of her baby), donned Trevor's raincoat, and killed Will. In her crazed mind, Janet believed that by killing Will, Trevor (the father of her baby) could spend more time with her and less time with Hayley, who was being abused by Will. In one final desperate act, Janet kidnaped her sister Natalie and planned to kill her. Before she could do it, Janet went into labor and Natalie was forced to deliver her sister's baby, Amanda. Back in the boardroom of Enchantment Cosmetics, Erica (finally divorced from Adam) refused to get wrapped up in an affair with Dimitri. However, with a single kiss, Dimitri swept Erica away. They made wild, passionate love as Dimitri declared that his marriage to Angelique was over. However, when the time came, Dimitri couldn't bring himself to leave his recovering wife. A new arrival brought profound terror to Pine Valley in the spring of 1992. Carter Jones was handsome, smooth, and smart. Oh so smart. But not smart enough to stay away from his ex-wife, Assistant District Attorney Galen Henderson. Carter had just been released from prison after serving time for spousal abuse. He immediately began subtly stalking her, careful to lean on the right side of the law while he was doing his evil deeds. Trevor kept a watchful eye on Carter's every move, hoping to catch him in the act. But Carter Jones was not going to be stopped! In a horrible act of revenge, Carter set fire to Trevor's house, with Natalie trapped inside. Trevor rushed in the burning house, and pulled Natalie to safety. Doctors at Pine Valley Hospital said that Natalie, blinded by the explosive blaze, might never see again. Furious that his vengeful plan had flopped so badly, and feeling guilty that an innocent woman had become his unwitting victim, Carter took action. He disguised himself as a kindly hospital orderly, Kyle, and befriended an unsuspecting Natalie. Ultimately, the madman became obsessed with Natalie, and when she put the pieces together and determined his identity, he kidnaped her . Again, Trevor raced to Natalie's rescue, but Carter got away before finally being apprehended in nearby Corinth. Back in Pine Valley, handsome reporter Edmund Grey was making Pine Valley his home, while wooing fellow journalist Brooke English. Unbeknownst to anyone but Dimitri's obsessive mother-in-law, Helga, Edmund was actually Hugo's bastard son. But Helga, in a desperate attempt to insure that Angelique remained "mistress of the manor," burned the codicil of Hugo's will in which he admitted Edmund's true heritage, and left him Wildwind. But not before Edmund caught a glimpse of the document. Edmund trembled as he returned the weathered document to its hiding place in a book. When he returned to it, the will was gone. His search for truth took Edmund Grey halfway across the world to Budapest where he tracked every move of Erica and Dimitri, who, just days earlier, had re-discovered their love in the beautiful Hungarian city. Waiting for the opportune moment, Edmund kidnapped Erica, holding her hostage in a wine cellar below Vadzel, the Marick ancestral home. Hoping to make Dimitri honor Hugo's missing will seemed simple enough, but Dimitri refused to give in to Edmund's demands. Released by her captor, Erica returned to Dimitri, only to spy on him holding Angelique in his arms. Stunned, Erica returned to Edmund and agreed to become his accomplice. Later, the Marick brothers teamed up to confront Helga, finally cornering her atop an ancient stone wall. Before falling to her death, Helga admitted the truth that she burned the will. She confessed that Edmund is Dimitri's brother. Back in Pine Valley, Opal Cortlandt went into labor during a snowstorm. With Joe Martin on the phone instructing him, Palmer delivered their darling son, Peter. At year's end, Tad Martin returned to Pine Valley with amnesia and a new identity -- Ted Orsini. With his head searing with pain, Tad began to have brief recollections of his past. Natalie, blind for months, enjoyed a Christmas miracle. "Nat, what is it?," asked Trevor. "I can see, everybody. I can see!"
