This particular video is of particular historical importance because we see the challenges of space flight through the eyes of a junior high school science teacher who has not had the benefit of seeing a human in orbit around the Earth. There were many unknowns at the time. A significant portion of this video focuses on the challenges of traveling from Earth to Mars. As of the date of this YouTube Posting, Elon Musk is planning a manned trip to Mars in 2024. That is approximately 64 years after Dad's lesson was first captured on film. This set of five lessons were part of a broader project that according to the instructor, Richard Rumppe, were intended to both teach students confined to their homes as well as resolve the issue of science teacher's in the Twin Cities without the requisite background and licensure to teach science. The set of videos were broadcast on KTCA (channel 2)-Twin City Area Educational Television (what is now known as TPT-2) in the Minneapolis, St. Paul area of Minnesota, USA. Instructor: Richard F. Rumppe Science Teacher Minneapolis Public Schools 1959-1992 Born: 1932. The videos in this series were originally on 16 mm film, stored in their metal cans in the basement of Richard Rumppe, and brought to digital life through the generous contributions of his daughter Mary (Rumppe) Young and her husband Steven Young MD of Mt. Vernon, Iowa.
